Do it for the Blog

“Do it for the blog!” comes from the edge of the icy pool carved out by a waterfall over hundreds of years. I stood at the edge of a cave trying to find the courage to jump as my friends cheered me on from the side lines. We had just completed a 4 km hike along the deserted creek trail, affectionately called Deep Creek by the locals.

The trail while well-worn was steep, rocky and even missing in places due to landslides but it wasn’t stopping us from making it to the waterfall, when we finally made it to the end of the trail all you could see was cliff face.

The waterfall had managed to cut its way into the cliff, leaving behind caves and pools at different levels like a split level house. I unfortunately don’t have a waterproof phone case or else I would have brought it into the caves when we climbed inside. Scaling the side of the rock and across makeshift tightropes made of logs, we climbed into the second level of three. All while doing our best to not cut our bare feet on the rock and not touch the frigid water. It was incredible to be surrounded by rock, to see the moss and ferns growing on the damp face.

When we first arrived at the falls there was a group of kids swimming and playing in the pools. Living up to my Girl Guide motto to always “be prepared” I had thought ahead enough to wear my bathing suit under my gear in case it was hot enough to justify a dip creek. Never one to say no to an adventure I gave my friends my clothes to keep dry and moved to the edge…

It. Was. Cold. I have never in my life been in water so bone chilling cold. I swam as quickly as I could to the edge to get out of the water and warm myself in the sun. My teeth may have been shivering and my knee was bleeding from hitting it on a rock but I’d happily make a Deep Creek Dip a yearly tradition if I get lucky enough to spend more summers here in Quesnel.
