Hello everyone, my name is Jess!

I’m honored to have you following along with my adventures this summer! Let me first tell you a little bit about myself. I am 23 years old and currently studying Mechanical Engineering at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna, BC. Kelowna has been home to me for the majority of my life, having moved here from Gillam, Manitoba when I was 6. For those of you who have heard of Gillam will know that moving to Kelowna was pretty much like moving to heaven. From the onset of school it was pretty apparent that I had a knack for numbers, as Math, Physics, and Calculus all came second nature to me. And so, after I graduated high school I walked with a calculator in hand and a passion to solve integrals to pursue a career in engineering.

Amidst my third year of university my boyfriend at the time gave me the highest honor of asking me to be his wife. We got married last summer and shortly after the wedding we began our family, our puppy family that is. Nova is an Australian Shepherd and just about to celebrate her first birthday (yes, there will be a party). And just very recently the three of us packed up our things and moved from Kelowna to Vernon for an incredible opportunity to work for Tolko Industries. And that’s probably the shortest wrap-up of my life I’ve ever done.

Now that you know a little bit about me, let’s jump to the topic of why I am writing this blog. For the next 8 months I will be working at Tolko Industries Armstrong mill as a Control Systems Student Engineer. What is a Control Systems Engineer you may ask? Well that’s a great question, but you’ll have to stay tuned to find out, because I’m still learning what it is myself. I started working at Tolko on May 7th with zero knowledge of how a mill operates or how a 3rd year mechanical engineering student like myself would be able to help make it any better. In the past month I have learned more about controls than I ever could have from a classroom. Without boring you with the nerdy stuff, I’ll just tell you that I get to do coding, prototyping, research into new technologies, and a lot of googling things I don’t understand. I already feel like part of the Tolko family and I can’t wait to see what else I will get to learn in the next 7 months.

And now I’m going to leave you with a bit of a game so that you can get to know me better. This game is called 3 Truths and a Lie. I’m assuming most people know how it works (or can guess by the title), but for those who don’t, the basic premise is that I will give you 4 facts about myself; 3 of them will be true and one will be a lie. Your job is to comment below the one you think is a lie! And here they are:

  • I can rip a phonebook in half.
  • I have travelled to 20 different countries.
  • I can solve a rubik’s cube in under 90 seconds.
  • I have 50 digits of pi memorized.

Best of luck!

Until next time,

Jess

I had to be the one to solve this, so spoiler alert. It’s solving the Rubik’s cube in under 90 seconds.

Never known you to be much of a Rubix girl… I’m putting my money on that one 🙂

  • Jo-Ann says:

Well I know you have at least 25 digits of pi memorized but don’t think you have 50. So I’m going with that one. Love you Pumkin
