Blog 7 – Kayla Brock

Hello everyone! Today was my last bush day of the summer! My remaining two days are office days and clean up days. It’s unbelievable this is almost over. I’ve had such a great summer and am beyond relieved I expanded my comfort zone by taking this out-of-town position. Silviculture was a lot of fun, and I developed a huge interest in it.

Today, I was lucky enough to take Matthew (the other blogger from Quesnel) out with me to finish off my research plots for my grad essay. It was his first bush day ever, and I think I did a good job at putting him to work. Shannon (my supervisor) challenged Matt to come back to the office and tell her five things he learned with me today, and I’m certain his list is exceeding ten facts. It was very rewarding teaching people my summer obtained knowledge; it’s neat realizing how much I learned!

By the end of the day, he was identifying tree saplings left, right and center. At one point, he even told me he was jealous of my job (it’s THAT fun). Our plots were up an FSR we haven’t been before, so it was a good first-day and last day for each of us. We were around the areas where I saw my grizzly bears, and I was REALLY hoping we’d see them today, but unfortunately, we didn’t see much besides some bunnies and grouse.

He was beyond prepared and brought lots of snacks, so we had an entertaining cheezie filled ride there and back. We had a car karaoke sing-off on the way home today; I think that was a good bush closure.

Despite the smoky afternoon today, we had a great view. Picture this scenery without the smoke! In the dead centre of this picture is a pretty wetland too. I taught Matt what all the “pretty purple flowers” were today. For all you non-botany enthusiasts, it’s fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium). That’s a wrap for Tuesday!
