Summer Adventures

Hello everyone! I wanted to take this blog to tell you a little bit about the adventures, the camping, and the road trips I’ve taken so far this summer.

In mid-June Brendan and I went on a spontaneous weekend camping trip with my sister and her husband. We drove out to Merritt (about an hour away from us) to a beautiful provincial park called Kentucky Alleyne Lake! For those of you who have heard of Kentucky Alleyne Lake will know what a hidden gem this place is. For those who haven’t, these photos will hopefully do justice to its beauty. There are two breathtaking lakes with emerald green water surrounded by peaceful forests. The campsite is first come first serve but there are plenty of sites if you get there early enough! If you’re planning on checking it out, I would highly recommend bring LOTS of bug spray and make sure you keep your tent zipped up at ALL times (I mean it, the mosquitoes love this place just as much as we do).

Kentucky Alleyne Lake is easy enough to get to, if you’re driving on the HWY 97 connector between Kelowna and Merritt, you just need to take the exit for highway 5A to Princeton and the turn off to Kentucky Alleyne will be your first left. The Kentucky Alleyne lakes are a fairly well-known spot, so the real hidden gem, and a place that not a lot of people know about, is Bluey Lake. Bluey Lake is not a provincially monitored campground which means it is free to camp at and it is usually much quieter than the Kentucky lakes. And getting there is super easy too! Just before you enter the Kentucky Alleyne campground there is a dirt road on the right, follow this road for about 5-10 minutes and you’ve arrived at Bluey! Trust me, you won’t regret checking this lake out.

Our next adventure took us to Vancouver Island on Canada Day long weekend to celebrate the marriage of Brendan’s sister. We spent 5 days in Port Alberni exploring the small town and appreciating it’s incredible restaurants and views. Luckily for us, and Brendan’s sister, we hardly got any rain while we were there! We walked along the water, ate a ridiculous amount of clams from the “Clam Bucket”, and had an amazing time with family. On our way back to the ferry in Nanaimo we stopped at MacMillan Provincial Park to see one of the oldest forests on the island. The douglas fir were towering above us, some of them more than 800 years old! I would highly recommend the quick pitstop to check it out!

And just this past weekend Brendan and I celebrated our 1 year anniversary! I surprised him with an exclusive weekend getaway to Mabel Lake. Three years ago my Uncle bought a shell of a boat and decided he was going to be like Noah and build an Ark. Well he literally did that and anchored his “Ark” on Mabel lake. Mabel lake is another provincial park 45 minutes from our house, just north of Lumby, BC. The houseboat was the perfect little getaway for us and Mabel lake is absolutely beautiful. Although I was told it was “busy” at the time, the lake is so big it still felt like we were on our own little getaway. Luckily for us, my GoPro came in just a few days before we left! So I put together a little video of our weekend. Enjoy!
