The End of a Chapter

In what has felt far too short a time, my summer with Millar Western has come to an end. The last couple weeks did not have much new to report. I was kept quite busy right until the end completing what crossing inspections I could for the year, and leaving the rest for next year.

NAIT Forest Technology

With the summer coming to a close and the impending school year looming over us, I thought I would take the opportunity to talk a little about the Forest Technology program at NAIT. Our program is all about practical application. This is evident right from the get-go when our first five weeks of class are done from cabins in the middle of the Albertan wilderness called Kidney Lake.

Bad Luck Comes In Threes

So the last few weeks have consisted mostly of crossing inspections, and while I thoroughly enjoy doing them, they have presented their own set of problems. For example, the inspections that need to be completed are all in fairly remote areas where truck access isn’t always an option, and while I love to take out the ATV, I learned the hard way not to do so without a working winch,

Population Sampling

Last week a new phase of my job began: Crossing inspections. Millar Western owns hundreds of kilometers of road and within those roads are thousands of culverts and bridges, most of which are nothing but cross drains for the ditches, but some cross over larger streams or small rivers. Concerning Fishermen

In my first blog I promised fishing would play a major part of my summer, and I would like to share some of my fishing experiences with all of you over the summer, but before I do I feel like I should touch upon the nature of fishermen. I have always found fishermen to be very much like magicians; we are masters of deception and we never tell anyone our secrets.
