Woodland Sonnet

I’ve decided to do something a little bit different this week, and write a Shakespearian Sonnet about woodland animals. I made every stanza about a different animal. All but one of these animals I have seen while working in the woods here this summer. The only one I haven’t seen here while in the woods, I have seen plenty of activity from and have seen in person in other places in Canada ( I did see one from the helicopter this summer).

Like all jobs, forestry has its bad days, and plenty of bad moments. Anyone in forestry can most likely think of countless situations that can make these days painful; being stuck in bad weather, quads/argos breaking down, technology not working correctly, endless beaver floods. I personally (if you haven’t noticed by now) absolutely hate having to cross beaver dams. Climbing over rotten logs at the bottom of a valley is also disheartening.

One thing that it appears we are unable to escape in forestry, is beavers. These small animals have a devastating effect on our forests. Most of the imagery we use is but a few years out of date, but when we’re sent to layout a block in preparation for harvesting, its almost scary the number of times that a block is either flooded or needs adjusting due to a beaver’s impact.

This week I wanted to talk about something that I mostly find annoying in the woods: cobwebs.

I don’t have an issue with spiders. Some of them look kind of weird and I won’t pick those ones up unless I have to, but that for me is just a general “leave things in peace” rule. I’ve handled plenty of big spiders before;

The Dangers of Forestry

I always knew forestry was amongst the most dangerous jobs. It just never really seemed that way. We’re all provided levels and levels of training. I have knowledge and skills now to do things I never imagined I’d be capable of doing.

                 In my mind, I saw forestry as dangerous mostly because of the wildlife you can encounter,
