Many Weyerhaeuser employees have long career history with the company. Some have even started working in the mill before I was born. It’s always interesting to hear about the history and changes the mill had from the people that have lived through it.

Larry has started working in the mill long ago when it was owned by Proctor and Gamble.

Meeting New People!

Grande Prairie is bigger than it may look. 2015 census puts its population at nearly 70 thousand people, and in the early 2000s, it was the fastest growing city in Alberta. Even though it is Alberta’s seventh largest city, there aren’t many Asians. Among the Asian population in the town, Filipinos are the most common, and rarely Koreans.

How Does a Pulp Mill Work?

I previously thought all wood products came from a same kind of pulp, but I was wrong. There are several different types of pulp, categorized by their specification and type of tree used. The pulp manufactured by the Weyerhaeuser Grande Prairie Pulp Mill is Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK), which is used for tissue, high-quality paper, paper reinforcement, filter, and even medical garments.

“Adventure is out there!” -Young Ellie, Up (2009)

I’ve always liked her attitude to life. Everyday an adventure, everyday an explorer. This internship is my first time working in a forestry industry. As a civil environmental engineering student, thought of working in forestry didn’t cross my mind. I mean, my previous work terms involved road construction. I dealt with soil, not trees. I made roads, not wood products.
