Wrapping up a Great Summer!

For the final few weeks of my internship with Weyerhaeuser Princeton, I have been working on my own project surveying the survival of some of the trees that were planted this past planting season.  Specifically one of the variants of Lodgepole pine that was planted has been experiencing high rates of mortality, so I have been surveying the blocks that contain these pine to determine the scope of the loss,

Working in Okanagan-Falls

Over the past couple of weeks I have been spending some time over in the Okanagan-Falls Weyerhaeuser office. Located about 100 km east of Princeton this opportunity has given me the chance to gain even more exposure to different geographies of the B.C. interior and how things are done differently in different areas.

One thing however about the office being so far away is that a requirement for getting a full days work in is to leave very early in the morning,

This past week I spent more time on the planning side of the Weyerhaeuser operation. I had the opportunity to go out with Al Lawes of Lawes Forest Management, one of the planning contactors for Weyerhaeuser and walked some of the blocks that he had laid out in the winter.

At the very beginning of the layout process a broad target area is defined and then thoroughly walked.

A Wide Variety of Experiences

One of the greatest parts about this internship has been the range of different parts of the forestry sector that I have had the opportunity to gain experience in. For the most part I have been spending time in the silviculture department, which handles the task of returning the log site to the way it once was. It is essentially the end stage of the logging process.

Getting Stuck

The past couple of weeks have been some of the busiest so far. The 2014 planting season is now officially completed, with over 2 million trees planted throughout the last two months. While the planting season was winding down the site preparation program was just starting up.

One of the tasks that has been taking up the bulk of my time lately has been going out to recently harvested cut blocks,

What A Welcoming Community

Before moving to Princeton one of things that I was most nervous about spending my summer here was the possibility of having nothing to do on weekends or in my spare time. I was moving to a small town in British Columbia from which I had no contacts other than my future coworkers that I had been communicating with leading up to the internship.

Blog #2 Keeping Busy at Weyerhaeuser

Since starting my Internship with Weyerhaeuser the main question that friends and family have been asking me is what kind of jobs I am doing here. So I thought throughout the week I would take pictures and write a blog about some of the jobs that are keeping me busy!

Ribboning Planting boundaries for planters is important and can be done for many different reasons.

My first week at Weyerhaeuser

Initially I would like to thank Weyerhaeuser and The GreenestWorkforce for this delightful opportunity. Everyone at Weyerhaeuser was very welcoming and aided my transition from being a student in Vancouver to worker in Princeton.

My name is Riley Finn, I am from Kitchener Ontario and I am studying natural resource conservation at the University of British Columbia. In October of 2013 I received an email from the faculty of forestry’s student services,
