A New Beginning

May 23, 2014 8:47 am Published by Leave your thoughts

It’s my first time blogging, so I think I’d better introduce myself…

My name is Donjeta Ademaj and I am one of the lucky winners of the Greenest Workforce Internship Program. I recently graduated from the Human Resources Program at Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning. I left my hometown in Toronto, and began my exciting adventure at AV Nackawic,

May 20, 2014 1:57 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

Initially I would like to thank Weyerhaeuser and The GreenestWorkforce for this delightful opportunity. Everyone at Weyerhaeuser was very welcoming and aided my transition from being a student in Vancouver to worker in Princeton.

My name is Riley Finn, I am from Kitchener Ontario and I am studying natural resource conservation at the University of British Columbia. In October of 2013 I received an email from the faculty of forestry’s student services,

Hi everyone, my name is Kevin and I am currently working as an Electrical Engineer Intern at Canfor's sawmill in Mackenzie. I spent the first week working with the Electrical Technicians learning and assisting with troubleshooting PLCs out here in the field. From working with the technicians, I have come to learn the importance of communication and teamwork between the engineers and the technicians.

A New Kind of Connection

May 15, 2014 4:43 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

Even as a returning adult student, I found myself starting my university career with grand ideas of obtaining an education that would make the world a better place. I began by starting my education with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, learning of the intricate web of connections between DNA to cells to a living being that almost bordered on the spiritual.

Interviewing the People of West Fraser!

May 15, 2014 4:27 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

A lot of students, including myself at one point, don’t want to move too far from the city, and are hesitant to try new industries that they don’t know much about. The intention of this blog post is to given an insight on what those working in the pulp and paper industry believe it is about.

Could you give an overview of what you do at SLP?

Road Exploration Part II

May 11, 2014 10:20 am Published by Leave your thoughts

This exploring is not only an amazing way to familiarize myself with the area and its inhabitants, but also my co-workers for the coming months. The people you spend your day with can make or break a job, as you often spend more time with co-workers then your own family! (And being so far from home, it is certainly true for me.)

Road Exploration Part I

May 9, 2014 10:16 am Published by Leave your thoughts

Amazing start to the season! After a week of being guided through the safety culture and orientation to principles of Tembec, my fellow summer students and I have been released into the Martel forest. After a hard, snowy winter, the roads moving through these forests have been revealed, so we begin explore them for access.

On Thursday of this week,

Since we always have our phones with us, the pictures on our phone give a good representation of where we’ve been and what captured our attention. So to sum up my experience in Slave Lake so far I would like to share some pictures from my phone.

It’s a myth that “The pulp and paper industry is old and has no more room for growth”

March 11, 2014 1:31 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

I had heard that a lot at school and a lot from my parents since numerous saw mills closed in the Vancouver area back in the late 1980’s. When I came to Slave Lake Pulp (SLP), I was expecting to work mostly with pulp and other wood products that are made by West Fraser. I was surprised when I arrived to learn I would be working on a “biomethanation”

Beginnings

Firstly, I would like to thank the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) and Slave Lake Pulp (SLP) for this wonderful opportunity. The managers at SLP were very welcoming and assisted me in every way possible with my move to Slave Lake.

A bit about myself:

My name’s Navjot and I’m from Surrey B.C., about a one hour drive southeast from Vancouver.

Opportunity

Opportunity: Whether you are a senior manager, a skilled tradesperson, a new graduate, or someone looking for a new career path, we all seek opportunity at one time or another.

My experience at Tolko and in the forest products industry has been defined by opportunity. Initially, my internship at Tolko was an opportunity to pursue my passion for people.

Meet Mr. Thorlakson

September 5, 2013 3:27 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

Apparently, the name “Mr. Thorlakson” doesn’t fly with Tolko’s President and Chief Executive Officer.

This was just one of the many useful facts that I learned when I sat down with the unassuming, approachable man behind the Vernon-based forest product empire.

Each quarter, Brad Thorlakson meets with ten employees at random in the Vernon Office for a frank,

I can’t believe this is my last week with Weyerhaeuser! Time has flown by – it seems like last week I had arrived in Grande Prairie. After my last week, I’m heading out to William’s Lake, BC for a week long fall camp – a field school requirement for school, which I’m really looking forward to. From there, it’s back to Vancouver for my final year of my degree!

A week with Kyle

August 11, 2013 1:12 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

Another week has gone by, with only two more weeks remaining in my internship. This week I worked with Kyle Waterman the entire week, I helped him with his roads projects as well as him helping me with the pine beetle baiting program. It was a pretty typical week, other than Kyle finding a moose antler! I was glad he found it because I drove past it right before he found it (doh).

Enjoying my time in Peace River

August 7, 2013 11:28 am Published by Leave your thoughts

I am really enjoying working for DMI and spending time in Peace River.

I was able to make sometime the other day to check out the Peace River valley and take sme pictures up on one of the highest hills in the area “12 Foot Davis.”

One interesting thing I have done recently is collect root samples from aspen trees.
