Stop Me If I Drone On

July 20, 2020 10:49 am Published by 1 Comment

For my second entry in the Green Dream Blogs, I would like to share my experiences flying drones with you!

Through the excitement of moving to Grande Prairie and starting work, the first couple of weeks were like many other jobs. Getting to know your supervisors, understanding the operating procedures of accessing your physical workspace (very important during a global pandemic) and general safety training were all things that we participated in while settling into our respective roles.

Flagging Tape, Best Before: Summer 2025

July 17, 2020 12:24 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

For my third entry in the Green Dream Blogs I would like to share my experiences reflagging pre-harvest blocks with you.

“Better if Used By”, “Best Before” and “Expires On” are all terms we are familiar with when it comes to the food and perishable goods that we purchase every week at the grocery store, but did you know that common flagging tape also has an expiry date?

The Basics of Forest Surveying and Competition Assessment

July 13, 2020 2:47 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

This summer, I’m spending a lot of time working on competition assessment and control projects. Whether we regenerate a cut block using natural or artificial regeneration, priority number one is to make sure that those trees can succeed. In that respect, competition between crop trees and weeds* is a very big deal in forestry.

Competition is a complicated topic that deserves its own post and much more.

Hello dear readers and fellow bloggers,

Time goes by so fast! This is my third month as an intern at Resolute, and I have to say that it feels much longer. There is so much to learn and to do every day, especially the last couple of weeks during which I received new projects from my supervisor.

Hey readers, before I get into this blog about my horrid experience, I would love to set a back story on how this blog relates to the forestry industry. Working in a community like Meadow Lake is not all about the job. On my days off, I can drive 30 minutes and be witnessing some of the most beautiful lakes ever.

Innovation – what it means to me, and what it means to forestry

July 6, 2020 2:22 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

It’s that time of year when you start to wonder why the temperature is hitting 30 degrees and you realize “oh no, summer is half over”. That’s how I’ve felt this past week. I can’t believe that it’s already July and everyone is making the most of Canada’s birthday. I’ve had an interesting week in the field as I was given a new toy to reduce the risks of heat stroke associated with spending long days walking cut blocks.

Did I Break the Mill? Probably

July 6, 2020 1:38 pm Published by 2 Comments

Oi welcome back to the next most exciting thing since video chats with your boss where he accidentally turned himself into a potato on zoom. Today I’m talking about the projects I’ve been assigned and a few projects I’ve assigned myself.

My blog will mention the use of HMIs and the PLC. In short, the HMIs are electronic display stations set around the mill that can be linked to different tags.

Hello! My name is Julia Hollingsworth, and I am one of this year’s silviculture interns at Weyerhaeuser Grande Prairie. After studying Biology at UNBC, I worked in Grande Prairie for a few years, so I am very happy to be able to do an internship in the place I call home.

Hello dear readers,

Alas, this shall be my last blog for the summer as my time with Al-Pac has come to an end. It has been a great summer and I am very thankful for all the great experiences I have had in the past couple months. It has been wonderful to get to know my team as well as the other summer students and learn about the forest industry hands on.

Ah yes. The summer project. A subject for focal practice. A diligence builder. A black hole for all the extra time and energy that the summer is so conducive to. Let me introduce you to the “Drummer Boy”, an electronics/programming amalgamation of rhythm, and my DIY project for the summer. It’s an 8-bit, 8 voice polyphonic, polyrhythmic, sample-based drum machine inspired by the iconic Roland 808 drum machine used in the production of tracks like “Paul Revere” by Beastie Boys and “Love Lockdown” by Kanye West.

Live to Work, Work to Live

I had meant to do so much more with this blog. I was thinking of posting a blog on the green end, a blog on the finishing end, a blog on the entire forming line, a blog on safety culture, one on the community, another on the general process creating OSB, some about the hiking trails in Edson, some interviews with some great friends of mine in the mill,

My Prince George summer

August 12, 2019 3:45 pm Published by 1 Comment

Welcome to the fifth and final installment of my Green Dream blog. My original intention for this blog was to showcase some 3D visualizations in Esri’s ArcGIS Pro, but, I can’t seem to get my computer to cooperate.

Instead, I’d like to recap some of the adventures I’ve had this summer in Prince George and the surrounding area.

Wildlife at Work

August 12, 2019 3:27 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

With the summer quickly coming to an end (less than a month and I will be back in the classroom), I’ve decided that it’s time to do a blog looking back at some of the wildlife that I’ve been fortunate enough to observe this summer. Anyone who lives in small town or rural Alberta surely gets to see some wild animals.

A summer to remember

August 12, 2019 3:05 pm Published by 1 Comment

Here we are, approaching the end of the summer and I’m getting sentimental. I have learned a lot about what it really means to work in forestry, and its safe to say that I really enjoy it. I got to explore an area roughly the size of Latvia (I checked in Arcmap), and even though I didn’t see all of it,

Those Clouds are Beautiful

The marsh called Edson is actually starting to fade away now. There is still heavy rain (and hail) every now and then, but it is finally starting to clear up. Neil’s rain dance spell is fading away! It only lasted two whole months. Last year, there was nowhere near that amount of rain. It was overly dry if anything. I suppose that’s what we get for living in the area.

Short & Sweet

July 30, 2019 9:22 am Published by Leave your thoughts

I am keeping this blog short and sweet, as the title says, because I will be on vacation. When I return however, I will give tips and tricks for the berry foraging season that will be in full peak. Especially in blueberries in old cutblocks that have just started to become edible. Pictured above are wild strawberries (left) picked on along a winter road I was inspecting crossings on.
