A Picture Says A Thousand Words

July 7, 2014 10:17 am Published by Leave your thoughts

Even though I love words, it is true that pictures can say thousands of them in an instant. These are some moments in my day that stopped me in my tracks to capture the beauty of that moment. Enjoy!

Getting Stuck

July 3, 2014 10:34 am Published by Leave your thoughts

The past couple of weeks have been some of the busiest so far. The 2014 planting season is now officially completed, with over 2 million trees planted throughout the last two months. While the planting season was winding down the site preparation program was just starting up.

One of the tasks that has been taking up the bulk of my time lately has been going out to recently harvested cut blocks,

More than Just a Job

July 3, 2014 9:48 am Published by Leave your thoughts

I’m having such a great experience working for Millar Western this summer. I am grateful not only for this internship opportunity but as well for the other awesome things that have come with moving out here to Alberta.

I’ve spent some time camping with my friends up north on Freeman Lake.  We we’re lucky enough to get some great weather,

Keeping Busy

June 30, 2014 11:08 am Published by Leave your thoughts

Hey guys, sorry I’ve been a little behind on the blog posts lately but as per usual it’s easy to stay busy around here. These past few weeks have been all about new experiences for me. I went in my first helicopter ride; unfortunately I was way too excited about the whole situation and it never even cross my mind to take any pictures,

From Logs to Lumber

June 30, 2014 10:00 am Published by Leave your thoughts

This past two weeks I have been fairly busy. I am also starting to get more comfortable with my role and I am starting to adjust well. I get feedback from the machine monitoring and make adjustments as needed in order to keep the lumber on target size. I have also made a few work instruction manuals for other employees to trouble shoot the machinery when management or myself are not around to help.

Timbersports keeps traditional forestry skills alive

June 26, 2014 3:45 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

This past weekend, I had the honor of volunteering as a timekeeper at the Stihl Timbersports Series Western Qualifier, held in Fort Saskatchewan, just outside of Edmonton.  Timbersports is not hugely popular in Alberta (they are more of an East coast thing), so it was pretty exciting to be able to help out at such an important event.  For those that don’t know,

We are on our second group of planters I get to meet them today and see how well they do on their first day. I am more prepared for them this time,

A Surprising Scale

June 17, 2014 7:03 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

Hello again folks, and welcome back to another blog from AV Nackawic. Since writing my last blog, I’ve had a lot of new experiences here in Nackawic. The most startling aspect of my job is the scale at which everything happens. Every couple of days I will be in a different part of the mill and I will see something that is much bigger that I imagined it would be.

What A Welcoming Community

June 17, 2014 6:49 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

Before moving to Princeton one of things that I was most nervous about spending my summer here was the possibility of having nothing to do on weekends or in my spare time. I was moving to a small town in British Columbia from which I had no contacts other than my future coworkers that I had been communicating with leading up to the internship.

Fun Facts!

June 17, 2014 6:46 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

Some things I’ve learned while working in this industry:

• Whitecourt has been named Canada’s Forestry capital for the second year running.  How lucky is it that I get to work here?
• Canadian forests are replenished and consumed at a sustainable rate, ensuring the resource's infinite resilience.  Sustainability isn't a 'saying' here; it’s a commitment.

So Much Has Happened

June 10, 2014 10:23 am Published by Leave your thoughts

Hello everyone, this is only my second blog post, but it seems like so much has happened since my last entry.  The last two weeks I have been learning how to use a program named MOPS as well as experimenting with pivot tables in Microsoft Excel.  After spending only a couple of hours with both tools, I was struck by how significantly computational power has affected the capability of engineers to efficiently monitor and control chemical processes.

Dreaming Big – Sleeping In

June 10, 2014 10:11 am Published by Leave your thoughts

Thanks to the awesome team at Tolko, I really do love my job – but it doesn’t seem to make it any easier to pull myself out of bed on a Monday morning. I spent a little too much time dreaming big this morning – I slept right through my alarm. I got out of bed at around 7:30 AM, got myself ready and I was out the door by 7:50 AM for work at 8:00 AM.

I am incredibly excited to be back at Tolko’s corporate human resources department again, this time working with the compensation and benefits team on exciting new projects.

Another Two Weeks Gone By

June 9, 2014 2:32 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

Well another 2 weeks have gone by which means I have even more exciting stuff to tell you guys about! Last week was pretty standard with being out in the bush, I did my first full block assessment of season. So basically what this entails is going into a cut block, after the planters are finished, and throwing a plot every 100 metres.

Life After High School

Hey guys, I have been having lots of fun for the past couple weeks since my last blog. I have also learned very well how to get stuck and get a tow out. While I have been working, I’ve been looking back at how far I have come since high school. Going from high school to College is one of the scariest and exciting times I have had in my life,

From Field School To Field Work

In case anyone is wondering, my name is Kyle.  I am working for Millar Western in Whitecourt as a roads summer student.  Even though summer has been here for almost a month, I have only just started working for Millar Western.  I spent the first three weeks of my summer at a field school in Lac la Biche, a required course for my degree in Forestry at the U of A.

A Mountain of Paperwork

I would like to start my blog by expressing my gratitude to AV Nackawic for their willingness to be involved with such an incredible program, and to the Forest Products Association of Canada for organizing these opportunities. These student positions give us the opportunity to experience an industry setting before we graduate from our respective universities. If it wasn’t for these opportunities,

Blog #2 Keeping Busy at Weyerhaeuser

Since starting my Internship with Weyerhaeuser the main question that friends and family have been asking me is what kind of jobs I am doing here. So I thought throughout the week I would take pictures and write a blog about some of the jobs that are keeping me busy!

Ribboning Planting boundaries for planters is important and can be done for many different reasons.

What The Bioenergy Project Means To Me

It’s difficult to believe that I’ve been working at Millar Western for a month now.  With everything that I’ve been up to, the time has passed so quickly.  Some fun things that I’ve been working on include lab testing and recording of particulate matter and chemicals in the plant effluent, charting values, field work for ground water quality sampling and testing,

Gaining Confidence

May 30, 2014 10:36 am Published by Leave your thoughts

Hi everyone, I think I forgot to introduce myself in my first blog so I will do it in this one. I have just recently completed my second year at University of Toronto as an Electrical & Computer Engineering student. I will be studying in depth into Control Systems and Energy Systems while pursuing a minor in Engineer Business.

My internship here at Canfor’s Mackenzie Sawmill has been great and I have been exposed to many control systems used here in the sawmill and the planer.

Planting A New Forest

May 28, 2014 9:27 am Published by Leave your thoughts

When first applying for this position, I had no idea what to expect. New forest, first forestry job, none of my usual comforts acquired through my last 8 years on Vancouver Island. Needless to say, I was all nerves….Would my university education actually prepare me for the industry (a huge concern for many university students!)? Would I actually like it?

Hitting The Ground Running

May 26, 2014 8:36 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

I am all done my training and officially started my job! Yay! My job this summer is to check the quality of the trees that planters (contractors hired by Millar Western) put into the ground. This is the first time I have ever been looking over other people’s work, which is a huge responsibility, because their pay is determined by the quality of the planting.

My First Week in Alberta

May 23, 2014 9:16 am Published by Leave your thoughts

Hi I’m Brooke and I will be completing my Green Dream internship with Weyerhaeuser Timberlands in Grande Prairie, Alberta. It’s hard to believe I’m already headed into week 2 up here; everything’s been a whirlwind of activity between leaving Ontario and getting settled up here in Alberta. Flying on my own was a new experience in itself on top of moving to a location where you literally know no one.
