I can’t believe its August and almost time to return back to online school. COVID-19 has really taken its toll on the world, and life has gotten some getting used to. In Ontario it is now mandatory to wear masks in all public places, and the amount of times I’ve had to run back to my truck to grab it after walking a mile to the door entrance is keeping me in good shape. This blog is my last blog of the summer, and in preparation for this blog, I have allowed myself to reflect on the previous 4 months of work and the last 2 months of blogging. As my summer position at Tolko grinds down to a halt, and I pack my things to move back to Calgary for school, I wonder how the time can fly by so fast.

One of the projects I’m working on this summer is a sheep grazing pilot project. While grazing is sometimes used for brush control in other parts of the world, it doesn’t generally happen in Alberta. However, there isn’t a lot of data available to tell us why this is. So, we are trying to assess whether sheep grazing is an effective and practical way to control competition in young cut blocks in Weyerhaeuser’s forest management area.

One of the things I have really enjoyed this summer is working with the two people responsible for silviculture at Weyerhaeuser Grande Prairie. Tyler Niles and Jamie Miller have taken all the silviculture interns under their metaphorical wings and helped us develop skills that we will need in the future as foresters. Somehow the summer is already approaching its end. The past few weeks of August spent doing research, interpreting cutover boundaries on the 3D station, clearing haul roads of fallen trees and more have gone by very fast. Despite the unique circumstances of the summer I have had the opportunity to learn a lot this season. Sadly, the 2020 Green Dream blogging season is also nearing its end.

As my summer work with Tolko begins to wind down, so too does my blogging internship with FPAC. Fall is in the air and I am getting ready to head back to the University of Regina in September. Thankfully, fall is my favourite time of year because it means hunting season has arrived. For my final blog post, I’d like to reflect on the summer’s highlights and the things I learned on the job this field season.

For my final entry in the Green Dream Blog, I would like to give an overall summation of my summer in Grande Prairie, as well as fill you in with some of the other odds and ends that I was able to participate in this work season.
As another summer work season quickly approaches the end, it is difficult to look back and feel as though I participated in as many tasks as I had hoped.

Most woodlands divisions are similar with one goal in mind. It is their responsibility to manage the forest and to supply the mills with enough wood to keep them running efficiently.

Like I mentioned in my previous blog post, most of my work this summer has been surveying. I have been working nonstop on Weyerhaeuser’s stocking survey programs, pre-herbicide assessments, and sheep grazing data collection projects. I’ve been working on a lot of the data management from these projects, and I have also been doing a lot of the plots myself.
