Another summer has come and gone, and I am so pleased with how it went! For my last blog, there are three different points I wanted to touch on. They are all very different topics so I’ll dive right in.
During my last week I got to go up and observe the crane working. Oh man, this was the coolest thing!

Over the summer, I was able to get to know some of the operations outside of the sawmill. Those places include the kilns, energy plant, and planer mill! I wanted to touch base about these because they are imperative to our lumber production!
We will start off at the sawmill outfeed where the forklift drivers will come pick up the lifts of green lumber.

This week, I had the opportunity to head out to the log yard and practice some scaling. We have scalers at Blue Ridge, who are all excellent at their jobs. It was a great opportunity to learn from one of them, and I wanted to give some insight into the world of scaling. Scaling is important to forestry because we need to have a fair and consistently applied basis for measuring the volume coming into the mill.

Where the Rivers Meet
In my first blog I mentioned I wanted to talk about the Whitecourt area. My family moved here nine years ago, and I’ve I really grown fond of this place. Not only do we boast one of last years “Canada’s best restroom” for those travelling through (haha), but there’s some really great perks to living in this forestry driven town.

Hello everyone! I can’t believe it’s August! Warmer weather means harvesting is up and running here in Blue Ridge. In the last few weeks I got to go out with a couple of our operations supervisors to check out the quality of logs being harvested. This summer, I’ve been focusing on helping to ensure high quality logs are continuously being brought into the mill.

gillian-stauffer-sawmill-blog-In blog #2 I talked about how I pull sample boards from some of the machine centres in the saw mill, so I thought for this blog it would be a good idea to go over those machine centres while describing the flow of the mill.
The logs from the yard are brought into the mill by one of our four entry bins.

I would like to start this post by acknowledging the incredible firefighters, first responders, and the other folks working hard on the BC forest fires right now. Your hard work is incredibly appreciated, thank you. For those that have been affected or evacuated, you are in mine and many others thoughts right now. I hope things start looking up for you,

When I tell my friends I am working Quality Control, a lot of them aren’t too sure what exactly the job entails. To be quite honest, I wasn’t even too sure what to expect. Essentially, my job is to ensure that the specifications which West Fraser has decided on for lumber standards are consistently being met. There are so many different variables that can affect the quality of the lumber,

Hello everyone!
I would like to start this post by thanking FPAC for the opportunity to share my experiences this summer through this amazing internship. I would also like to thank West Fraser and everyone else who has taken the time to introduce me into this wonderful field. I’d like to introduce myself for my first blog post and give some insight into what I’ll be doing this summer.
