This past week has been quite chaotic. Being tasked with road, bridge and culvert inspections presented two major challenges; uncooperative weather and altercations with insects.

By uncooperative weather I mean that one day we got absolutely drenched and had to use the quad exhaust pipes to keep our hands warm. In the same week it was hot enough to go for a dip in the Willow River (see photos and video).

A Short Story….

The day is Wednesday June 24th, the setting is beautiful White Spruce and Aspen mixed wood stands, with pockets of Black Spruce bogs and even sandy Jack Pine sites, in other words a very diverse forest area north of the mighty Lesser Slave Lake.

One thing you need to know is that these vast forests are not the only variable on the landscape.

This past week has been quite interesting. As most of you may already know Slave Lake has been very dry this year, and the wildfire hazard has reached extreme status for most of May and June. The Tolko Athabasca division was on high alert due to the Old Smith Highway fire only 10km away from the mill. As a result,

Bobby’s back! Let the adventures begin!

Hi there, my name is Robert Bellamy and I have just completed the first year of my Forestry degree at the University of Alberta.

Now that school’s out, I look forward to my summer employment in Slave Lake, Alberta at the Tolko Industries’ Athabasca division. I worked there last summer and fortunately I was invited back, as I had such an awesome time and I expect this summer will be just as good if not better.
