Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries Inc. (Al-Pac) is seeking a Specialist, Safety and Occupational Hygiene to work out of our mill site near Athabasca, Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and ensuring regulated compliance requirements through inspections, investigations, and communication on enforcement requirements. The candidate will oversee field monitoring, testing and measuring of areas and items identified in the occupational hygiene program (e.g. indoor air quality, sound testing, asbestos and mould sampling etc). The position also monitors mill operating areas and provides feedback to leaders on compliance with health and safety policies and programs.

Role Responsibilities

• Health, Safety and Security:
o Follow the organization's HSS policies, procedures, and mandatory instructions to identify and mitigate Health and Safety risks and risks to the wellbeing of oneself and others in the workplace.
o Instruct the team in safe working methods, identify instances of risky behaviours within the team and take appropriate action including escalating serious issues as appropriate.
o Monitor OHS hygiene requirements and ensure hygiene program is compliant.
o Develop and maintain the hygiene monitoring and testing program.
o Ensure monitoring and testing of equipment is maintained and logged.
o Provide coaching and training on occupational hygiene to leaders and team members.
• Regulatory and Compliance Management:
o Maintain compliance and testing for gas and other hazards throughout the mill.
o Monitor hygiene compliance, prepare reports and advise HSS leadership on non-compliance and more complex hygiene related problems.
• Information and Business Advice:
o Resolve queries from internal or external customers or suppliers by providing information on complex processes and the related policies, referring to others where necessary for interpretation of policy.
• Internal Communications:
o Communicate as needed on hygiene testing and procedures.
• Assist in Investigations and Resolve Complaints:
o Partner with the business to Investigate and resolves issues in an expedient, fair, and transparent manner.

Role Requirements

• Post-secondary Degree in a related field (OHS, Industrial Hygiene, and Environmental Health). An equivalency of a related two-year Diploma plus five years of recent related experience will be considered.
• 5-7 years working knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code and Act, and related legislation.
• Considered an asset:
o CRSP certification is an asset.
o Certification in Occupational Hygiene is an asset.
o Forestry background or experience and would be an asset.
• Experience in Health, Safety and Hygiene in the forestry/manufacturing sectors would be preferred.
• Knowledge of OH&S and regulatory compliance requirements.
• Well-developed organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple assignments.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to influence and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels.
• Knowledge in ergonomics,
