Last Adventure

On the last weekend of my internship, most of the West Fraser interns went out to one of their cabins on Quesnel lake. Quesnel lake is one of the deepest lakes in BC with a depth of 2000 feet. After following the convoy of cars after work on Friday down a dirt and gravel road that likely took a few years off my little Subaru’s life, we took a short boat ride in complete darkness to the cabin. Exhausted from the work day and eager to make the most of Saturday we went to sleep pretty early.

On Saturday we woke up early to a full English breakfast and I took the opportunity of having calm water to kayak the lake. Being the first out on the water meant that the only sounds I could hear were the sounds of my paddle on the water. After seeing a bald eagle perched on a floating log and taking in the slightly unsettling silence I decided to head back to the cabin.

The weekend wasn’t especially summery, the sun rarely peaked out of the clouds and light drizzles were common. When I saw the forecast, I thought that our plans would change when we got there, however spirits were high so this did not stop us from getting out and enjoying the water. We all loaded into a blisteringly fast jet boat to try our hand in wake boarding. The variety in skill levels made for some good laughs. Some people were complete naturals whereas I was quite the opposite, but that did not stop me from trying over and over.

After a few hours we returned to shore and spent the rest of the day eating way too much and bumming around on the beach. Some people went cliff jumping and we rounded of the day with badminton frisbee and a barbeque.

After a few hours I started to realize that having the tow rope ripped from my hands over and over again really takes a toll on the forearms. This took away my dexterity to the point where I couldn’t tie my shoes.

The whole experience was so surreal; a little piece of civilization in an otherwise untouched area made it the perfect way to recharge before the last week of work. I want to thank my hosts for their amazing hospitality if they are reading this. Even though I lost all feeling in my arms for a few hours it was worth every second.
