I work in forestry; it accounts for half of every dollar generated in British Columbia. That’s a lot but doesn’t actually surprise me considering practically half of everyone I know in Quesnel works in forestry and every time I look outside I see nothing but key word “forest”! I work with trees at Quesnel Plywood everyday but that isn’t enough for me.

During my second week at Canfor I got a chance to sit with our Talent Acquisition (TA) team. At first I was a little upset that I had to leave my desk in Learning & Leadership because I had my own phone with my name on it, which I thought was really cool (it’s the little things in life right?).

Today marks a month working here at Northwood. It is also the day I realized hey yunno what? I think I can actually do this whole work thing. In fact I might actually like it better than school. The staff here at Northwood has been extremely welcoming, from showing me around different parts of the mill to the entertaining lunch room conversations.

I always knew forestry was amongst the most dangerous jobs. It just never really seemed that way. We’re all provided levels and levels of training. I have knowledge and skills now to do things I never imagined I’d be capable of doing.
In my mind, I saw forestry as dangerous mostly because of the wildlife you can encounter,

Today showed just how quickly nature can work. Two days ago I inspected a road and found a bridge with a dam built a few meters downstream, backing the water level up to within 3 inches of the bridge deck. If the level rose any higher it could cause a catastrophic failure of the bridge, so this morning we went out with the appropriate permits to deal with it.

After four years of writing essays during my time in university, I never would have believed I would be a summer blogger. What an exciting opportunity it is to share my summer experience of living in Vancouver and working as a Human Resource intern at Canfor with all of you readers.
My first week in Vancouver proved to be a bit stressful.

As I was driving into Prince George I couldn’t help but feel a slight tinge of nervousness. I was back in the city a year earlier than expected, working an eight month co-op term at Canfor’s Northwood Pulp Mill. It was the first time I would be financially independent and living on my own; the first real job I would be working pertaining to my field;

I’ve always liked her attitude to life. Everyday an adventure, everyday an explorer. This internship is my first time working in a forestry industry. As a civil environmental engineering student, thought of working in forestry didn’t cross my mind. I mean, my previous work terms involved road construction. I dealt with soil, not trees. I made roads, not wood products.

When I tell people I’m from Quesnel the response is usually “Where’s that again?” This is what I hear when I’m in Vancouver anyway. My usual reply is “Up North.” If I’m travelling abroad, people don’t always know British Columbia at all, which is understandable, so I say “You know Vancouver? It’s like near there, but not really anywhere near there.”

What an exciting opportunity it is to be writing to you all this summer. This is my first time blogging for FPAC and working for West Fraser so I’ll to begin by introducing myself. My name is Sydney and I am a third year student in the bachelor of Natural Resource Science program at Thompson Rivers University.
