A Surprising Scale

Hello again folks, and welcome back to another blog from AV Nackawic. Since writing my last blog, I’ve had a lot of new experiences here in Nackawic. The most startling aspect of my job is the scale at which everything happens. Every couple of days I will be in a different part of the mill and I will see something that is much bigger that I imagined it would be.

For example, UNB fluid mechanics courses have taught about the purpose of clarifiers, but seeing a diagram on the board doesn’t come close to expressing the actual size of these pieces of equipment.

This is a photo of a clarifier at AV Nackawic.

This is a photo of me standing above the clarifier. The room behind me in the photo is approximately in the middle of the clarifier.

To further illustrate the scale of operations here, I took this photo of a gentleman standing outside one of the buildings here at AV Nackawic. On the left is a zoomed in version of the photo to show where the person is standing. On the right is the original photo:

So yeah, that’s all for now. In my next blog, I will be discussing what it was like to experience a “shut down”, which means the mill was halted completely to allow for repairs and cleaning.

Thanks for reading,

Robert Silliker
