So much has gone on recently! I have been given some interesting projects – for example, making -center lines on old and new forestry roads. As you might just guess, a center line marks where the center of a road is or will be, and is an important part of the blueprint for road building, maintenance and reclamation.
After I received this assignment, I really sank myself into it. In fact, I quickly came to the realization that the first road I was making the center line for was currently inaccessible for any type of vehicle, and I spent two days getting stuck and covered with mud and soaked past my shoulders. I can’t complain, though — I did have a lot of fun going through the mud and water.
My current project is to travel along the same types of road doing culvert inspections. Turns out, the maps I was working on last month were preparation for this massive job. In a culvert inspection, you look for any culverts that might be under-sized for the conditions and need correction. If there is any issue with the culvert and erosion on the site, you need to make notes on the conditions found and come back with solutions, such as installing silt fences to deter the erosion and stop silt from getting to the water, and encouraging growth of vegetation that can help prevent erosion. Also during this inspection, you are making sure that there are no problems that could affect fish that may be going through the water course. I’m really enjoying this project so far, and the fact that this work is something I’m almost taking full responsibility for.
Me on the job – installing culverts is an important part of environmentally responsible forestry road building.
So, I’ve been having fun writing this blog, but would like to make sure that readers enjoy it, too. With this post, I am including a link to a short survey about my blog. If you can take a couple minutes out of your day to complete the four questions, it will be appreciated. I’m hoping the survey will help me get a better understanding of what people want to see and hear about. One of the first things I’m planning is to start to attach photos that I have been gathering – come back soon to revisit my blog entries, for a look at what I’ve been seeing in my job, like some of the culverts I have been working on, and at some of the different adventures I have been up to on my days off!
These are sediment fences and coco mats I planned out and installed.
