Fact: With forestry, this is definitely false. Vernon may be a small town, but thanks to Tolko, there are big opportunities in the private sector with plenty of room for advancement.
Tolko’s towering corporate office is located in Vernon, a small city of about 30 000 people. Plenty of corporate opportunities exist, including the ability to perform meaningful, interesting work; participate in cutting edge projects, and have access to possibilities for advancement.
In human resources, a recent business graduate could begin as an HR assistant or coordinator, moving into an advisor or regional HR position and later as a human resources manager, reporting directly to an executive.
The opportunities are also vast in marketing, where one could begin a career as a lumber sales assistant, progressing to a representative position. Market development and managerial positions are also available with experience.
Information technology opportunities are surprisingly readily available; at Tolko, one could begin a career as a support desk specialist, advancing to a team lead, and then managerial positions with increasing responsibility.
Similarly, Tolko’s divisional and woodlands operations are located in smaller centres. By no means does this mean a limit on the opportunities for advancement.
With forestry, you really can have the best of both worlds – excellent career development opportunities and the small town charm that so many long for.
