My second week at Canfor

During my second week at Canfor I got a chance to sit with our Talent Acquisition (TA) team. At first I was a little upset that I had to leave my desk in Learning & Leadership because I had my own phone with my name on it, which I thought was really cool (it’s the little things in life right?). But as soon as I entered the TA department I was warmly welcomed by the Talent Acquisition Specialists and I haven’t looked back. The TA Team is so fun, we even get to listen to music! I have been learning a lot from our team members, both here in Vancouver and the team in Prince George. Everyone has been super helpful and encouraging. I am really enjoying Talent Acquisition and I think this is one area of Human Resources where I would like to focus my career. However, one obstacle for me to overcome is a personality issue. I am told that recruiters cannot be shy and I am definitely shy. To be successful in a career in Talent Acquisition, I will need to break out of my shell. I think I will be able to do it if I role model all of these big personalities around me.

The first thing I learned in Talent Acquisition is the effort that goes into posting a job. I thought it was as simple as uploading it onto a website but there is dedicated process. Canfor has a brilliant system for posting jobs and keeping them organized. It is interesting to learn about why it is so important to spend time and effort on a job posting and how that helps find the right candidate to fill the vacant position.

One thing I have really enjoyed is just getting to watch and listen to the talent acquisition specialists’ work. They promote Canfor as a great place to work, which they can do with a clear conscience. It is a first-rate company where not only are the people friendly and always willing to help, the organization’s actual core values are something to brag about. For instance, on the Human Resources side, the company encourages employees to share ideas and take initiative to try new concepts (within reason, of course.) On the business side, the company stands behind its products and promotes quality. Environmentally, Canfor uses 100 per cent of their trees to create lumber, pulp, and pellets and then with the remaining biomass they generate heat used for drying lumber and generate green energy. How innovative is that!

I can definitely say I am proud to work at Canfor because of its environmentally friendly approach and because it has clearly defined core values. I have so much to learn from this forest products company and its diverse staff. I can’t wait to see what this knowledgeable Talent Acquisition team will teach me over the summer.

Thanks for reading!
