Woodland Sonnet

I’ve decided to do something a little bit different this week, and write a Shakespearian Sonnet about woodland animals. I made every stanza about a different animal. All but one of these animals I have seen while working in the woods here this summer. The only one I haven’t seen here while in the woods, I have seen plenty of activity from and have seen in person in other places in Canada ( I did see one from the helicopter this summer). I don’t specifically say what animal I am on about in the sonnet, giving you the opportunity to guess, though I am aware that several of the stanzas could sound like they are on about multiple woodland animals.

I, personally, have only ever had one bad experience with one of the animals in this sonnet. I wrote about this specific past bad experience in a previous. I have heard stories about bad experiences others have had with some of the other animals in my sonnet. I, however, have been fortunate when coming across them and have only had fairly pleasant experiences with them (fingers crossed it stays that way)!

Woodland Sonnet
Through the woods I soar,
Searching for my prey.
Always after more,
My wings, they beat for days.

Crash! Down it comes,
For I must build a mighty house.
My great wall surpasses slums,
So much greater than tiny mouse.

Stand ye tall with courage and pride,
Oh my crown! Such a beastly rack.
For strength of king carried in stride,
There is no weight that breaks my back.

Tremble as you hear my growl,
And know the dark clawed beast is on the prowl.

Stepping away from my animal obsession for a bit – I wanted to mention that I finally checked out the blogs from all of the other interns – and wow! There is some amazing stuff there! I have felt that my past few blogs have been particularly bland, no matter how much I have tried to spice them up. I tried doing some time lapse videos to make a change, but somehow me and technology do not seem to get along. I thought about drawing but it never seemed to work out. I have been toying with the idea of writing a poem for a while now, and after seeing how creative everyone else has been, I am glad I finally changed it up a little! There were certainly some good laughs and knowledge in other people’s blogs. I also realized that people have been discussing their experiences outside of work this summer, and now I feel as though I have been rather foolish and narrow minded and not discussed my trips to Jasper and Yellowknife camping, or my kayaking trip, but at least I still have a few weeks left, and a two-week long hiking trip through the Rocky Mountains to finish it off, so I still have time. Have a wonderful week everyone!
