British Columbia wasn’t always made up of lumberjacks, like myself (I don’t actually cut down the trees, I just help in the production process, but I like the idea of being a lumberjack). Back in the 1800’s BC’s biggest attraction was a glittery yellow-y rare element called gold. And the man who struck gold in the Cariboo, was Billy Barker.

I work in forestry; it accounts for half of every dollar generated in British Columbia. That’s a lot but doesn’t actually surprise me considering practically half of everyone I know in Quesnel works in forestry and every time I look outside I see nothing but key word “forest”! I work with trees at Quesnel Plywood everyday but that isn’t enough for me.

When I tell people I’m from Quesnel the response is usually “Where’s that again?” This is what I hear when I’m in Vancouver anyway. My usual reply is “Up North.” If I’m travelling abroad, people don’t always know British Columbia at all, which is understandable, so I say “You know Vancouver? It’s like near there, but not really anywhere near there.”
