For the past three months I have been working as an Energy Management Co-op at Canfor’s Northwood Pulp mill in Prince George. What is Energy Management you may ask? Initially, I will be honest, I wasn’t too sure either. Canfor’s Energy Management program is focused on developing strategic plans for energy and cost reduction at their various wood products manufacturing facilities.

At the heart of British Columbia lies the perfect blend of urban and wild. Intertwined between the Nechako and Fraser Rivers and surrounded by thick emerald forest, Prince George is a bustling hub for adventure, entertainment, cuisine and industry. Yet, one needs to dive into the community and culture of the city to truly experience all the gems PG has to offer.

Peanut butter and chocolate. Drake and Rihanna. Canfor Pulp and Licella. Innovation happens when complimentary factors converge. That’s what Martin Pudlas, VP Operations at Canfor Pulp said at the International Bioenergy Conference & Exhibition held in Prince George earlier this month. Significantly more relevant than Drake and Rihanna, he was talking about Canfor’s joint venture with Australian biofuel production start-up Licella.

Two weekends ago my roommate and I visited our friend Ashley in Smithers. As we drove out from Prince George late Friday evening, I was mesmerized by the landscape around me. The lush countryside freckled with swamps was bathed in orange and pink hues.

Today marks a month working here at Northwood. It is also the day I realized hey yunno what? I think I can actually do this whole work thing. In fact I might actually like it better than school. The staff here at Northwood has been extremely welcoming, from showing me around different parts of the mill to the entertaining lunch room conversations.

As I was driving into Prince George I couldn’t help but feel a slight tinge of nervousness. I was back in the city a year earlier than expected, working an eight month co-op term at Canfor’s Northwood Pulp Mill. It was the first time I would be financially independent and living on my own; the first real job I would be working pertaining to my field;
