In my first blog I promised fishing would play a major part of my summer, and I would like to share some of my fishing experiences with all of you over the summer, but before I do I feel like I should touch upon the nature of fishermen. I have always found fishermen to be very much like magicians; we are masters of deception and we never tell anyone our secrets.

This week I wanted to talk about something that I mostly find annoying in the woods: cobwebs.
I don’t have an issue with spiders. Some of them look kind of weird and I won’t pick those ones up unless I have to, but that for me is just a general “leave things in peace” rule. I’ve handled plenty of big spiders before;

I previously thought all wood products came from a same kind of pulp, but I was wrong. There are several different types of pulp, categorized by their specification and type of tree used. The pulp manufactured by the Weyerhaeuser Grande Prairie Pulp Mill is Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK), which is used for tissue, high-quality paper, paper reinforcement, filter, and even medical garments.

It sounds cheesy but it’s an understatement to say DMI opens many doors of opportunity for their forestry students. My first two weeks of June consisted of mostly road maintenance, elementary school tours, and a surprise business trip with one of our planners to the AWES AGM. A large part of the first half of the summer requires weeks of road preparation before the summer haul can start in July,

Day 1: A quick glimpse into camp life
I was so pleased last week when I found out that my partner, Erin, and I would be staying out at camp in Chezacut for two nights. The area known as Chezacut is about two and a half hours west of Williams Lake, nestled between reservations in the beautiful Tsilhqot’in Nation of the Chilcotin Plateau.

I work in forestry; it accounts for half of every dollar generated in British Columbia. That’s a lot but doesn’t actually surprise me considering practically half of everyone I know in Quesnel works in forestry and every time I look outside I see nothing but key word “forest”! I work with trees at Quesnel Plywood everyday but that isn’t enough for me.

During my second week at Canfor I got a chance to sit with our Talent Acquisition (TA) team. At first I was a little upset that I had to leave my desk in Learning & Leadership because I had my own phone with my name on it, which I thought was really cool (it’s the little things in life right?).

Before starting this week’s blog, I would like to start off giving a shout out to all the other Green Dream interns. I encourage you all to check out the blogs from the other interns if you haven’t already done so. Stefano for example is not only writing but also hand illustrating comic strips in his blog. I am excited to see what other content you all come up with in the next couple months.

Today marks a month working here at Northwood. It is also the day I realized hey yunno what? I think I can actually do this whole work thing. In fact I might actually like it better than school. The staff here at Northwood has been extremely welcoming, from showing me around different parts of the mill to the entertaining lunch room conversations.

I always knew forestry was amongst the most dangerous jobs. It just never really seemed that way. We’re all provided levels and levels of training. I have knowledge and skills now to do things I never imagined I’d be capable of doing.
In my mind, I saw forestry as dangerous mostly because of the wildlife you can encounter,

Today showed just how quickly nature can work. Two days ago I inspected a road and found a bridge with a dam built a few meters downstream, backing the water level up to within 3 inches of the bridge deck. If the level rose any higher it could cause a catastrophic failure of the bridge, so this morning we went out with the appropriate permits to deal with it.

After four years of writing essays during my time in university, I never would have believed I would be a summer blogger. What an exciting opportunity it is to share my summer experience of living in Vancouver and working as a Human Resource intern at Canfor with all of you readers.
My first week in Vancouver proved to be a bit stressful.

As I was driving into Prince George I couldn’t help but feel a slight tinge of nervousness. I was back in the city a year earlier than expected, working an eight month co-op term at Canfor’s Northwood Pulp Mill. It was the first time I would be financially independent and living on my own; the first real job I would be working pertaining to my field;

I would like to start off by thanking Canfor Pulp Innovations (CPI) and The Greenest Workforce for giving me the opportunity to blog about my experience working in the Canadian forest products industry. For my fellow readers who do not know who I am, allow me to re-introduce myself (Jay Z voice). I am a third-year co-op chemical engineering student at the University of British Columbia.

I’ve always liked her attitude to life. Everyday an adventure, everyday an explorer. This internship is my first time working in a forestry industry. As a civil environmental engineering student, thought of working in forestry didn’t cross my mind. I mean, my previous work terms involved road construction. I dealt with soil, not trees. I made roads, not wood products.

I would like to start my series of blogs by introducing myself and the wonderful company I will be working for, and a sneak peek at the future blog subjects. My name is Bailey and I am a University of Alberta forestry student who grew up as a farm girl north of Peace River, Alberta. This will be my second summer as a forestry summer student working at Daishowa-Marubeni International Ltd.,

When I tell people I’m from Quesnel the response is usually “Where’s that again?” This is what I hear when I’m in Vancouver anyway. My usual reply is “Up North.” If I’m travelling abroad, people don’t always know British Columbia at all, which is understandable, so I say “You know Vancouver? It’s like near there, but not really anywhere near there.”

Hello there! As this is my first blog post I thought I would start by giving you a little bio of myself and how I got into forestry. My name is Faron Dyck and I grew up running around the bush in a small town in northern Alberta by the name of La Crete. I was exposed to forestry starting at quite a young age as forestry is the second biggest industry in town next to farming,

What an exciting opportunity it is to be writing to you all this summer. This is my first time blogging for FPAC and working for West Fraser so I’ll to begin by introducing myself. My name is Sydney and I am a third year student in the bachelor of Natural Resource Science program at Thompson Rivers University. I was born and raised in the beautiful community of Williams Lake and was thrilled to accept a summer work term here in my hometown with West Fraser’s Williams Lake Plywood division as a planning forestry student.

Forestry. It’s not something I even imagined myself doing as a child. To be entirely honest I never even realized, while growing up, that it was a career. That someone could get paid for hiking through the woods and hugging trees.
Of course it’s not that simple, and as an adult I would never have expected it to be,

In the last couple of weeks here at West Fraser I have gotten the chance to try out some new tasks that have given me some insight into other aspects of forestry. Recently, I was fortunate to join new hire Chris and wily veteran Morris, members of the planning forester team in Hinton to learn about block layout. As a part of the spatial harvest sequence,

August? Didn’t I just write exams? Didn’t I just get here? I honestly do not know where the time went or why summer always has to fly by. Before I even begin to reflect upon my past few weeks here in Hudson Bay, I want to truly emphasize how much I enjoyed this summer break in Saskatchewan (of all places) with Weyerhaeuser.
