Friendly Community

Hello fellow readers, I have really been enjoying my work here at DMI in Peace River Alberta. My mentor has taught me a great deal about the pulping industry, but there has also been an unanticipated benefit of moving 8 hours north of my hometown: Calgary.   Through exploring the town of Peace River, these past 12 weeks, I have discovered that it is truly a great place to live.  The community is very friendly, and a comfortable atmosphere has been engrained into my day to day routine thanks to the kindness of the Peace River citizens.

If any of you were born and raised in a metropolitan area, do not fear the boredom myths that you so often hear regarding country towns.  It was not uncommon, when I told my friends and family that I was moving to Peace River, to hear them respond with something along the lines of, “What are you going to do in your spare time? Won’t you be bored?”

At first I was hesitant to answer this question as I honestly didn’t know how I would keep myself entertained outside of my job.  Now, when people ask about what I do for leisure, I respond by listing a plethora of activities, such as: drop in volleyball and floor hockey, golf, tennis, squash, weight lifting, bike riding, and yoga.  I often find myself engaging in these activities on weekends which is a much healthier alternative compared to the late nights and slow, unproductive mornings that living in a major city can bring.  These various past times have served as a healthy way for me to meet new friends that share similar interests.

It’s clear that Peace River doesn’t offer the vibrant social life of a big city; however, that certainly doesn’t mean that you have to be antisocial, as my time here has effortlessly demonstrated.   As a final thought, Peace River doesn’t get dark until 11pm during the summer, so there is no reason to fear those late night tee-times!  I plan to continue these healthy choices when I return to school in the Fall and hopefully spread them to some of my class mates too!
