Get Your White Picket Fence

Have you dreamed big when it comes to home ownership? Have you ever dreamed of buying some land and building a house?

I certainly do. If you’re like me, you might dream of buying a swanky condo. Maybe sometime in the more distant future, I’d like to settle down and build a house with an attached garage, wraparound veranda and a white picket fence. With skyrocketing home prices in Canada’s major centres like Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton, home ownership can seem but a lofty dream for my generation.

A quick check on thegreenestworkforce.ca reveals the (admittedly unfortunate) truth. The average home value in Vancouver is $929,049. It’s tough to dream big when you know that home ownership isn’t achievable until the distant future. Dashed away are the big dreams of a wraparound veranda and a white picket fence.

Compare that to Lavington, a community just 10 minutes east of Tolko’s Vernon Office, and home to Tolko’s original mill, the Lavington Planer Division. It is also an idyllic setting of huge lots, big backyards, sweeping valley views, quiet neighbourhood streets and estate homes just minutes from pristine beaches on both Okanagan and Kalamalka Lake. Homes here average $526,753. That’s $402,296 less than a home in Vancouver.

Here, you have room to breathe and grow without giving up major amenities that exist just 10 minutes away in Vernon. Enjoy short commutes to either the mill (1 minute), the woodlands office (7 minutes) or the corporate office (10 minutes), and spend less time on the road and more time doing what you love.

In Vernon, I can dream big that I might be able to build that dream home one day. With competitive compensation, I can feel free to dream of sitting on the veranda in a swing chair with my coffee, and know that it might be a dream come true one day soon.
