Job Postings

Hi again,

I have been at Canfor for just a little over two months now and I’ve had the good fortune to work on a number of big projects, which have also been really beneficial in my development in Human Resources.

One project involved the revamping of job postings. As I have mentioned in a past blog, it is not an easy endeavor to post a job. The process to attract the best talent takes considerable effort, time, commitment, and specialized knowledge.

My first move was to research best job recruitment practices in order to get innovative ideas on how to make these job postings stand out. I then studied what the actual positions entailed so I could have a better understanding of where to focus my attention when developing these descriptions. I also had weekly meetings with Mindy, Talent Acquisition Coordinator in Prince George. She was very helpful in giving me direction with the content and structure of the postings.

After researching the best way to attract good talent through job postings, here is what I found:

  • Have a detailed description of the job
  • Put yourself in the mind of a jobseeker
  • Describe the challenges and interesting factors of the job
  • Make it an advertisement rather than a document
  • Use key words to enhance your search engine

The most challenging part for me was putting myself in the mind of a jobseeker. I had to carefully review what I would want to see if I was searching for a job – what would grab my attention and make me want to work for a particular company? I think that is the most important part of the job posting because if someone can relate to the description of the scope of the work and also share the values of the company, then they are more likely to apply and be passionate about their potential employer.

After a few weeks of extensive research, rough drafts and Mindy’s invaluable guidance I developed three revamped job postings. I have to say I am pretty proud of how the postings turned out and am grateful for the opportunity to be able to learn how to develop a cutting edge job description. This will help me significantly in my future career as a Talent Acquisition Guru, in the wonderful world of human resources.

Thanks for reading!
