Well, my summer in Vancouver and at Canfor is coming to an end and I can’t say I am happy about it. I can easily report this has been one of the best summers I have ever had. Getting to experience Vancouver and all it has to offer has been amazing. I feel very at home in this city and am not looking forward to leaving.

I have also come to love working at Canfor and have met some great people here who I will miss very much. The team I had the opportunity to work with over the summer consists of some of the best people I’ve met in my life. They are true professionals who want to help new people understand this profession. I have learned so much about work environments and human resources’ best practices over the past four months from working here. I’ve learned simple things such as how to look up a candidate’s contact information to more detailed tasks such as posting jobs for actual job interviews.

I have not only gained valuable work experience but life experience as well. Moving to Vancouver was a big change for me, but I have gained confidence from being here, including living alone, taking public transit, and meeting new people. I have made so many terrific relationships over the summer at work and outside of it.

I want to thank my boss Megan Cook for giving me this opportunity to work at Canfor and to FPAC for choosing me to blog about my summer. It has been a wonderful experience that I will never forget. I would also like to thank my colleagues for giving me guidance throughout the summer with work and personal life. I know it’s not easy to have a newbie in the workplace all summer long, but no one ever seemed annoyed or impatient with my questions. It was incredible to have such supportive people around me.

I had some pretty great support outside of the office as well. My best friend Bree was my partner in crime for the summer and I am not actually sure how we are going to get through our weekends without each other. I had been told it would be difficult to meet people in Vancouver and to an extent I agree, but I managed to make a few new friends who are special to me and I hope to continue those relationships into the future.

Vancouver, you are meant for me. This is not the end and I am determined to return in a few short months to start my life and career here.

Thanks for reading!

Olivia
