New Horizons

Hi Friends!

Here I begin my dedicated blog-writing to document my experience as an intern in Whitecourt, Alberta.  My name is Elizabeth, and I am an environmental engineering intern at Millar Western.  Surprisingly, it has been two weeks on the job, and already its truly remarkable how much I've learned.

#LifesBetterHere
First things first: Being a lover of nature and the outdoors, I can certify right off the bat that life is better here.  As a student, there are many career opportunities available to you, and it’s important to choose the path that upholds the values that you find important.  Being at Millar Western and working in the forestry industry has shown me already that I am in the right place.  I am working with people who support sustainable development passionately, the way I do, and believe in the rich opportunity that the Canadian landscape has to offer.  To find a career path that you can feel this way about is a truly wonderful thing.

The air is cleaner, the landscape is rich, the people are wonderful- Life is better here.

The Forestry Industry is something I've always appreciated, yet wondered if its importance had dwindled into the background behind our desire for mass consumption of manufactured goods and dependency on fossil fuels.  Often, the message students get about forests is that they're disappearing fast is that it is not a dependable resource.  This message is perpetuated by the notion that we should stop consuming forestry products and that people should stop using paper.  However, if there's anything I've learned, it’s that this is just simply isn't true.  The Canadian Forestry industry is abundant and consumed sustainably.  It has so much to offer Canada in terms of resources, sustainable alternatives, and careers.

I'm learning everyday- about the opportunities to become involved in my new community, about my participation at Millar, and how to further enrich my experience with new opportunities.  So far, one such opportunity was volunteering at the Environmental table at career day for Whitecourt's high school students.  I managed to get my picture in the newspaper, too!

I am so excited to continue my internship at Millar Western, constantly learning and developing my appreciation for this industry.  I look forward to keeping you all updated on my experience right here on my Green Dream blog!

If you had the opportunity to use your passion and work where you're enthusiastic about your job and eager to experience fulfilling and satisfying new endeavors, honestly… where else would you rather be?
