Real Life 101

Hello Good People,

I have some terrible news. It’s my last week here at Weyerhaeuser Vancouver Parallam. I have become so familiar with the plant, the people and even its distinct smell; it will take some time to adjust back to a quiet student life.

Over the past few months, it has been quite a ride as an intern here. I’ve had the chance to work with all levels of the organization, I’ve been able to meet with our suppliers and tour their operations, and I’ve been able to participate in a lot of quality developments. I was even able to have a brief conversation with Weyerhaeuser’s CEO as he toured our plant site. For a 21 year old student to be brought on to work with a team of both experienced and dedicated workers, my Co-Op term has given me an inside look of the industry and its potential.

I came on board the Parallam team at a time of change, with lots of adjustments being made to better suit a booming demand and accommodate a growing focus on sustainability. What I have experienced can never be taught in a classroom or read in a book, and many of the lessons learnt here will not be forgotten. With my internship coming to an end, I’d like to share with all of you some key advice in order to maximize your internship experience:

  1. There is never a task that is below you. You are here to learn, so seek value in all that you do and put your heart into it.
  2. Be creative, don’t be complacent. Never be afraid to challenge the norm – this is how real change comes about.
  3. Listen to what everyone has to say, but think for yourself.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the Vancouver Parallam plant for their patience, unending humour and for creating such a warm and welcoming work environment. It has truly been a pleasurable experience.

Brandon
