Summer goes on

Hello again.  It feels like summer is almost over, with only about one month left of the internship! Where does the time go?

I have spent the majority of this past week with Kyle Waterman, another intern, doing culvert inspections and center lining roads. Last Friday, we ran into some heavy rain in our adventure to find a road. The weather, combined with configuring the maps and GPS system, made for a challenging day. We ended up travelling about half of the workday, trying to figure out the different routes that we could take to access the said road. I learned that it is important to have a back-up plan, because getting to your destination isn’t always as simple as it seems on a map!

The collection of data on pine beetle is ongoing as well. Last week, I spent a day collecting information from the traps. I continue to find pine beetles both in the Driftpile log yard along Goose Tower road, as well as around the mill yard. Numbers appear to have decreased from the last time I had checked; however, I recently replaced the pheromone in the traps (scent that attracts the beetles), so I am interested to see what effect that will have when I check the traps around the mill yard tomorrow.
