Sustainable Hippie

The tree plant is going very well, and I have been working very hard for the past couple weeks. Checking trees can be very physically demanding, because you have to walk all day in the summer heat and get to at least 40 plots in for the day. The most plots I have gotten to is around 70 plots in one day. I have come back home very tired some days.

In my past blogs I have mentioned sustainability, and I am not sure everyone one knows what it totally means and comprises. Sustainability is the combination of social, economic and environmental needs. Sustainable development ensures the needs of today are met without compromising the needs of future generations. The social aspect is about being sure the community is involved and has a say in what is happening. The economic portion is about money, allowing people to have jobs and companies to make a profit.  Lastly, the environmental side of things is simply about making sure practices are not harming the environment where it cannot be reversed into its original state.

Got to see this beauty while driving to a block.

Without one of the pillars for sustainability, the whole structure will all crumble. The forest industry is sustainable in many ways, because it strives to create good jobs, which is important to sustaining many rural communities. It is also subject to rules and guidelines, to be sure the environment isn’t harmed and a forest management plan is made.  As well, forest companies are required to hold meetings to let the public know what is happening in their forests.

I would have to say tree planting is the most sustainable part of forestry, because we are regenerating the forests for the future. Tree planters have gotten a bad name; however, what they do for our future is amazing. The word hippie is a common term used to describe a tree planter.   I have been called a hippie before, and I take it as a compliment.  To me, it means someone who cares.
