The Numbers Don’t Lie

This is Jeremy, and I’m dreaming big at Tolko once again!

I’m dreaming of finding affordable rent when I graduate from school, and having money left over at the end of the month to do the things that I love to do!

Right now, I’m going to school in the awesome, booming city of Calgary, just seven hours east of Vernon. Unfortunately, rent is so high there that it’s tough to dream big about my post-graduation plans.

As of April 2014, the average one-bedroom apartment in Calgary is $1,087 per month, according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Try coupling that with a 1.4% vacancy rate and you’ll have a difficult time finding a place to live, let alone a place that you can love. It’s hard to dream big in a big city where it’s tough to stay afloat.

Back at home in Vernon, life is more affordable. As of April 2014, the average one-bedroom apartment in Vernon is just $649, according to CMHC. That’s a difference of $438 per month compared to Calgary, or $5,256 per year! Here at Tolko in Vernon, the wages are competitive with Canada’s top employers, meaning that you don’t have to give up money to be out here – there’s a good chance that with the Greenest Workforce, you’ll end up with more money in your pocket.

Of course, there’s more to life than money – there’s the lake, the beaches, the laid-back lifestyle, the world-class skiing, cobblestone sidewalks, independent shops lining a manicured main street and endless recreation. Plus, there’s plenty of opportunity for corporate-level career advancement at one of Canada’s largest and most reputable forestry firms if you desire.

The numbers don’t lie – it is further proof that I can dream big right here and right now at Tolko.
