The Plant Has Come To An End

Welcome to August, everyone. Summer is coming to an end. I always know when summer is wrapping up when the crickets start chirping.  They haven’t begun yet, so we still have some time.

The tree plant has come to an end, though! The tree planters have all gone back home until next year’s plant starts again. I would like to thank all the tree planters for being awesome to the Millar Western checkers.  We had a very good time looking over you guys.

After the tree plant, I will be a monitor on the herbicide program here, ensuring the chemicals, used to temporarily control competition, to improve the growth and survival of tree seedlings and saplings, are not sprayed in high winds, humidity or rain. The chemicals are used when it is necessary for the survival of the seedlings from surrounding grass, alder, white birch and balsam fir. The program requires long hours and hard days, but I am up for the challenge. Waking up at four to be out at a block will be the norm for me.  Wish me luck.

While the plant was coming to an end, I got the opportunity to visit Millar Western’s tree orchard, where I assisted in cone counts for about 1,300 trees. The orchard is used by Millar Western and surrounding companies as a seed producer for tree seedlings used in the planting. It is also used to test how trees react to different environments they are not accustomed to. Every three years, a harvest is conducted, and hopefully a lot of trees are producing a good amount of cones.
