Top 9 New Trees In My Backyard

This summer I’ve been helping my mom plant some new trees in our yard. There was a lot of digging and raking but they look pretty good and I know they’ll look even better in a few years when they start to mature. Some of them we bought new and some we transplanted from the forested area of our property. We’re all very excited about the new little trees, so I’ve made a list of them in order of my favourite ones (so far)

Cherry Tree
9. Cherry Tree: This little devil was one that I transplanted by myself. It was a sapling from three bigger cherry trees and it really had some deep roots. I took me almost two (semi procrastinating) hours to dig it up and replant it. During this time, a large whirlwind came out of nowhere and went right through me and the tree. There was dirt and ash from the fire pit flying everywhere and getting in my eyes. I didn’t even realise what it was until it passed me. After all of that, the tree looks a little sad but my mom says it should be fine next year as long as we give it lots of water.

8. Snowball Tree: The snowball is small now but will get pretty bushy and will lots of big blossoms in the spring. It’s pretty easy going since it’s been moved twice this summer and it seems to be doing well. I think we chose a nice spot to put it in next to some other new trees that will make it stand out and give a bit of a contrast.

Maple Tree
7. Maple Tree: We already have a few maples in our yard and this one will make a nice addition and take up some empty space in the front yard. It will hopefully get some dark red leaves in the fall!

6. Spruce: We transplanted this spruce from the forest part of the yard where it was growing pretty close to some bigger ones. So, it’s missing a few branches on one side but I’m sure this little tree will grow into a big and full conifer like the others!

Japanese Lilac
5. Japanese Lilac: My sisters and I chipped in and got my mom two new trees for her birthday. So I went to the nursery and chose this one because I thought it looked pretty. It turned out my mom already had one, but she said she wanted another so it worked out. It has really pretty blossoms, which got all over the back of my s.u.v when I took it home but it was worth it. At least it made my car smell nice.

4. Aspen: This was another transplant that my mom accidentally dug up with an excavator. We found a new spot for it and tried to get as many of the roots as we could with along with it. It’s fairly mature but should get much taller if it survives the move. We’re not sure if it will but we’re hoping for the best!

Birch Tree
3. Birch Tree: I picked out this birch with my mom and convinced her to put it in the front yard on its own. I love it. I can’t wait until it gets really big with gorgeous yellow leaves in the fall.

2. Butternut Tree: This is the second tree I picked for my mom’s birthday. It looks small and simple now, but it will grow into a really big and bushy canopied tree. Along with its good looks it will also produce some apparently tasty white walnuts. We planted it in the back near the small cherry tree, the aspen, and snowball, but it’s still visible from the road.

Cedar
1. Cedar: This isn’t actually a new tree this year but it is by far my favourite. It’s not my favourite on looks but it is because it’s home to two little baby birds and their parents. My grandpa noticed the nest about a month ago with four eggs in it. We watched the eggs and watched the parents fly around our back deck. Then just last week two of the eggs hatched and now there’s two little fuzz balls with beaks in there and we can always see the parents hanging around in other trees or on the fence with moths and bugs in the beaks. I did some deep research to find the species and figured out that they are Dark Eyed Junco’s, which is a type of small sparrow. This tree definitely made my summer and my number one!
