What A Welcoming Community

Before moving to Princeton one of things that I was most nervous about spending my summer here was the possibility of having nothing to do on weekends or in my spare time. I was moving to a small town in British Columbia from which I had no contacts other than my future coworkers that I had been communicating with leading up to the internship. I soon realized that keeping busy was not going to be a problem.

With help from both the couple I am staying with, Red and Carol Lawes, and my coworkers, I was signed up for the local Slo-pitch league within the first couple of weeks of staying in Princeton. I played softball for the majority of my childhood growing up in Ontario so the opportunity to get to play some ball twice a week is a great way to relax after working all day, and to get to know some of the locals.

On the weekend of June 7th my coworkers Trenna Macleod, Chris Pemberton, and Karen Brewer invited me to join them in a group mountain bike ride at the local China Ridge Trails.  The ride went up the Parker trail, which brought us to the beautiful China Ridge Cabin for a rest. Then proceeded down the Rail trail and ended in the nearby town of Coalmont for lunch at the Coalmont Hotel. Pictures from the day are below!

This past weekend the General Manager of the Princeton Timberlands, Rob Marshall, held his 35th annual Kentucky Fishing Derby on Salmon Lake. I spent the weekend camping with his family and friends, and had the opportunity to meet multiple outgoing and fish enthused characters over the weekend. Thank you to Rob and Wanda Marshall and family for having me out for such a fun weekend!

This coming weekend I have been invited to participate in a ball hockey tournament by Red and Carol’s son Al Lawes, who is also a planning contractor for Weyerhaeuser. I am very excited to spend the day playing ball hockey, as all forms of hockey were a passion of mine growing up.

Despite being such a small town, I have not had a problem keeping myself busy in my down time, thanks in large part to the outgoing individuals that have helped me get involved with the community!
