First things first, I would like to acknowledge all the inspiring blog writing from this summer’s Green Dream interns.  With some down time every now and then, I love to check up on all your blogs and read what you’ve been up to this summer.  All of your posts about your exciting experiences this summer have inspired my own, and been an absolute pleasure to read.

The Reality of Trial and Error

While working on my projects this summer, one of the strongest takeaway lessons I’ve learned is the reality of trial and error in the real world.  As a student, we learn by generating results from controlled tests, usually designed by TAs: all variables are in place, controls accounted for and results already predicted.  While carrying out labs and experiments in school,

Final Weeks

As I return from a long weekend vacation to Vancouver and Whistler, it has hit me like a ton of bricks that I’ve only got four weeks left here at Millar Western.  Not only do I have lots of work to wrap up, but I still have lots of weekend activities planned to do before I go.  There is no doubt this is going to be a busy month!

Featured in the Whitecourt Star

This past week, my roommate and fellow Green Dream Intern, Emma, and I were featured in the Whitecourt Star in an interview regarding our internships at Millar Western and how we’ve enjoyed living in Whitecourt.  This opportunity was a lot of fun.  It’s great to feel so included and welcomed in this town’s inviting community.

Busy, Busy, Busy!  Lately, so much has been going on in my department.  It’s been hard to find some time to sit down and reflect on the last two weeks and write about my experiences, but, alas, I have found a few minutes.

Recently, I picked up a project that was started by last year’s Green Dream intern,

I’m having such a great experience working for Millar Western this summer. I am grateful not only for this internship opportunity but as well for the other awesome things that have come with moving out here to Alberta.

I’ve spent some time camping with my friends up north on Freeman Lake.  We we’re lucky enough to get some great weather,

Fun Facts!

Some things I’ve learned while working in this industry:

• Whitecourt has been named Canada’s Forestry capital for the second year running.  How lucky is it that I get to work here?
• Canadian forests are replenished and consumed at a sustainable rate, ensuring the resource's infinite resilience.  Sustainability isn't a 'saying' here; it’s a commitment.

What The Bioenergy Project Means To Me

It’s difficult to believe that I’ve been working at Millar Western for a month now.  With everything that I’ve been up to, the time has passed so quickly.  Some fun things that I’ve been working on include lab testing and recording of particulate matter and chemicals in the plant effluent, charting values, field work for ground water quality sampling and testing,

Hi Friends!

Here I begin my dedicated blog-writing to document my experience as an intern in Whitecourt, Alberta.  My name is Elizabeth, and I am an environmental engineering intern at Millar Western.  Surprisingly, it has been two weeks on the job, and already its truly remarkable how much I've learned.
