Another busy week at work!

The marginal ground trial that was supposed to start this week has been pushed back to start Monday now, due to wet ground conditions from an abundance of rain recently. Last week, I attended a SafeStart conference along with employees of other forestry companies and contractors. The conference aimed to encourage us to think about our behaviours and actions in regards to safety. I took Friday off and flew home to Vancouver for Canada Day long weekend, which I spent shopping in the States, going to the beach, hiking, and spending time with friends and family. This week, since the trial was pushed back, I’ve been at the office doing various copying and mapping projects to keep our block files organized and up to date, which is important for the company to run smoothly and efficiently.

One of the gravel trucks releasing gravel onto the Main Haul Road

Today, I went out in the field with Nelson to gain insight into the road construction part of the company. There were eleven trucks cycling back and forth from the gravel pit (to load up on gravel), to the part of the Main Haul road where the gravel needed to be unloaded. The gravel pit is at kilometer 4, and the trucks had to travel all the way to kilometer 81 to unload the gravel, which is why so many trucks are needed to keep a steady flow of gravel coming to the area. Three truckloads of gravel are unloaded for every 100m of road, marked by wooden stakes. A grader will then come spread this gravel to ensure an even road surface, as best as possible. The heavy traffic and mass amount of weight that is put on the road each day causes inevitable wear and tear, which is why regular road maintenance is critical for safety and efficiency.

Anyway, I can’t believe it’s already July and I am more than halfway through my internship – time flies! Until next time, guys! Thanks for reading!
