I can’t believe this is my last week with Weyerhaeuser! Time has flown by – it seems like last week I had arrived in Grande Prairie. After my last week, I’m heading out to William’s Lake, BC for a week long fall camp – a field school requirement for school, which I’m really looking forward to. From there, it’s back to Vancouver for my final year of my degree!

After wrapping up the marginal ground project a couple weeks ago, I have been pretty busy, hence the overdue blog entry! FP Innovations left Grande Prairie to analyze the collected data and will eventually publish the results of the trial project, which should be interesting to read once released! Also, one of the equipment operators was kind enough to take us all for dinner to celebrate the end of the project!

The past week and a half have been busy, to say the least! Last Sunday, there was a flood relief event held at Muskoseepi Park, with local musicians playing all day, complete with a barbeque and amazing, sunny weather. I went to check it out with my roommate, and we ended up staying a good six hours! More importantly, the event managed to raise over $44,000 to help those affected by the floods!

The marginal ground trial that was supposed to start this week has been pushed back to start Monday now, due to wet ground conditions from an abundance of rain recently. Last week, I attended a SafeStart conference along with employees of other forestry companies and contractors. The conference aimed to encourage us to think about our behaviours and actions in regards to safety.

This past week I was working in the seed orchard, which is owned by 5 different companies, Weyerhaeuser being one of them. There are 5 different orchards, mostly used for genetic research. Some of the trees were seedlings while others were grafted with scions and root stock. There are numerous boxes throughout the orchard with slides that catch pollen, which are replaced every two days to determine the amount of pollen contamination from outside the orchard.
