Last day with the AOP crew

Friday was my last day with the AOP crew, after 5 weeks of designing operating plans for numerous blocks in the forest management area. It was great working with the guys, they must be some of the hardest workers I know, and I learned so much from them in such a short period of time. For the next week, I’ll be working in the seed orchard, collecting cones, applying patches to attract pine beetles, performing landscaping duties, and so forth. For the rest of the summer, I’ll be working in different fields with different people each week. This will give me exposure to see a variety of what the company deals with on a daily basis. After working in the seed orchard for a week, I’ll be doing truck safety audits for a week, and then for the first two weeks of July, I’ll be involved in a marginal ground trial, where we’ll see if new equipment can handle operating during summer months with certain ground conditions.

This weekend I was camping in Beaverlodge, which is about 40 minutes out of town, with a bunch of coworkers and their families. The other summer student and I were one of the few people staying in a tent, while everyone else had their huge luxurious trailers, complete with televisions, bathrooms, and beds – not real camping! We had a Sports Day (tug of war, three-legged races, etc) and a baseball game on Saturday, a potluck dinner, and a campfire going all weekend. Everyone is so friendly and the rain didn’t stop anyone from having a good time, and it was really nice getting to know everyone better. As great as camping was though, it’s nice being back at the college with hot showers and real beds, and I’m looking forward to starting a new field of work tomorrow!
