Gaining Confidence

Hi everyone, I think I forgot to introduce myself in my first blog so I will do it in this one. I have just recently completed my second year at University of Toronto as an Electrical & Computer Engineering student. I will be studying in depth into Control Systems and Energy Systems while pursuing a minor in Engineer Business.

My internship here at Canfor’s Mackenzie Sawmill has been great and I have been exposed to many control systems used here in the sawmill and the planer. I have had the chance to work with PLC-5 to write code to test the functionality of the PLC-5 I/O cards in RSLogix-5 program. I have never been exposed to the concept of ladder logic programming. However, I have been able to effectively apply my knowledge of other low level languages that I have been exposed to such as Verilog and Assembly to write the code. Another control system software that I have been exposed to is the RMCwin. I have successfully learned how to use motion commands, create plots, scale, offset, tune and create event steps with the RMC100.

I can now confidently say that I now know the general process of lumber production and how the sawmill operates as well as the planer. This is due to the AutoCAD project that I have been working on during the past two weeks. Last week I completed the layout of the planer with the locations of all the MCCs, PLCs, VFDs and Transformers. I am currently working on the same thing but at the sawmill. This project has allowed me to understand how the different parts of the mill operate and how the electrical systems such as Photoelectric sensors are installed and used.
